Contouring is a transformative makeup technique that enhances your facial structure, adding definition and dimension. At Izi Salon, our makeup artists use contouring to create sculpted, red-carpet-ready looks. Follow our expert guide to master contouring like a pro at home.

Contouring

What Is Contouring?

Contouring uses light and dark shades to mimic natural shadows and highlights on your face. Darker shades create shadows to slim or define areas, while lighter shades (highlighters) bring features forward. The result is a chiseled, balanced appearance that enhances your bone structure.

Tools and Products

Contour Product: Choose a cream or powder contour two shades darker than your skin tone with a cool, grayish undertone to mimic natural shadows. Creams blend seamlessly, while powders are easier for beginners.

Highlighter: Select a highlighter one to two shades lighter than your skin tone. Avoid shimmery formulas for a natural look.

Tools: Use a damp beauty sponge or a dense brush for creams, and a fluffy brush for powders. An angled contour brush helps with precision.

Step-by-Step Contouring

Step 1: Prep Your Base
Apply foundation and concealer to create an even canvas. Set with a translucent powder if using powder contour products to prevent patchiness.

Step 2: Map Your Contour
Identify areas to contour: under cheekbones, along the jawline, sides of the nose, and hairline. To find your cheekbone shadow, suck in your cheeks and apply contour in the hollows, blending upward toward your ears.

Step 3: Apply Contour
Using your brush or sponge, apply the contour product in small strokes along the mapped areas. Start lightly—you can build intensity. For the nose, draw thin lines along each side and blend carefully.

Step 4: Highlight
Apply highlighter to areas that catch light: tops of cheekbones, bridge of the nose, brow bone, and center of the forehead. Blend gently to avoid stark lines.

Step 5: Blend, Blend, Blend
Blend the contour and highlighter until no harsh lines remain. Use a clean sponge or brush for a seamless finish. Set with a light dusting of powder to lock the look in place.

Tips for a Natural Look

Use a light hand and build product gradually. Choose matte formulas to avoid a glittery effect. Blend in natural light to check for streaks. For everyday wear, keep the contour subtle—save bold looks for evening events.
